Sanitation & Hygiene

GHNU is currently implementing a WASH project in an attempt to increase access to safe water and improve hygiene and sanitation in Loro, Aber and Iceme sub-counties. Lack of access to safe water, poor sanitation and inadequate hygiene practices are major challenges facing the community as many diseases such as typhoid, cholera and dysentery, which are commonly found in the district, can be prevented. The project looks at increasing knowledge on hygiene and sanitation so that communities can take up action to address the gaps.

Sanitation and Hygiene Project Activities:
  • Develop sustainable institutional and infrastructural framework for rural WASH.
  • Design and implement Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS)
  • Support the District Local Government WASH initiatives
  • Capacity building of key stakeholders involved in WASH
  • Development of local legislation to regulate the use of clean water sources, pit latrine usage, and animal keeping.
  • Community mobilization through VHTs (community health workers)
  • Support to district programs, such as Sanitation Week and World Water Day

Accomplishments from the last six months:

  • 1,922 people reached with hygiene and sanitation information through community dialogues and sensitization meetings
  • 485 household visits conducted for sanitation promotion
  • 6 villages mobilized in Loro through Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) efforts
